    Dental Examination Instruments

In dental clinics and dental hygiene practices, various dental instruments are used regularly for performing dental procedures. The basic diagnostic instrument set is part of every procedure as these instruments are used for an initial intraoral dental examination and during dental procedures.

The basic dental examination tools are:

    1. Mouth mirror

    2. Dental Probe

    3. Tweezer

    Mouth Mirror

The mouth mirror or dental mouth mirror is the most important dental tool in the dental examination set. Dental mouth mirrors are available in numerous different types. Some of the examples are:

According to different sizes (small, medium, and large dental mirrors)

According to different shapes (round, D shape, teardrop shape dental mirrors).

According to mirror type (plane mirrors that include front surface mirrors and rear surface mirrors, magnifying dental mirrors that increase object size).

According to fabrication material (stainless steel and disposable dental mirrors made of plastic)

Other dental mouth mirrors are the double-sided dental mirror, which allows enhanced visibility as the tissues are retracted and visualized simultaneously. The dental mouth mirror with an LED light source in which the dental mirror handle has the batteries and the light source.

The examination instruments made from plastic are single-use disposable instruments. These instruments help avoid cross-contamination problems in dental surgery. These instruments are also helpful during busy clinical hours in case of a shortage of staff, community field visits, and examining high-risk patients.
    Sterilization
The stainless steel dental examination instruments are sterilized with the help of an autoclave. The sterilization of these instruments is usually carried out at 121 oC at 15 pounds per square inch pressure for 24 minutes.
The disposable dental instruments are sterilized with Ethylene oxide gas (usually mixed with carbon dioxide or nitrogen to make it less flammable). This ethylene oxide gas is used for the sterilization of instruments that have plastic or rubber components.

    Parts of Instrument

Each dental instrument has three parts working end, shank and handle.

The working end is the end of the instrument that performs the main function associated with that particular instrument. In some instruments, both ends are working ends. The dental team should work carefully while using these instruments to avoid injury to themselves or the patient.
The shank of the instrument provides the connection between the handle and the working end of the instrument. In many cases, it has some bends that help the working end of the instrument to reach difficult areas of the oral cavity.
The handle of the instrument is the part that the operator holds.
